Research Local Employers (Informational Interview)

This is a tool to assist you in making your career choice. Informational interviewing will give you insight into the field you are considering. Remember, there are negative aspects to every job. Try to discover what those are in this field, so you will know what to expect.

The information interview form (PDF) lists the minimum questions you should ask. Feel free to ask more. Look at this session as though you are the interviewer. Let the person know from the start you are not seeking employment, but you are doing research to decide if this career is right for you. If they know you are not looking for employment from them, most people will be eager to talk about themselves and what they do.

Take Notes
It is wise to write your findings down even if they don't fit into the questions asked on this sheet. You will probably want to go back and see who said what at a later date.
