Tough Choices

For the past month, the St. Charles County Council has reviewed the 2017 budget as proposed by County Executive Steve Ehlmann. This is a huge annual project, and Mr. Ehlmann and his staff did a great job. County Government is committed to a balanced budget and healthy reserves, but with the growth of our community and changing demands, this is becoming a challenge. One area the County Council discussed extensively during the budget review process is the needs of law enforcement and how we can continue to provide quality resources for police and prosecutors.

Emergency Communications and Operations in St. Charles County

The first responders of our county have always done a great job assisting residents in need. The EF3 tornado of May 31, 2013, damaged thousands of properties and left tons of debris behind – and county government, law enforcement, fire and EMS all did their part in the recovery effort. The ability for St. Charles County to respond to any kind of emergency and help our citizens is extremely important. While the county’s Division of Emergency Management and police/fire/EMS dispatch make the best of their current facilities, the existing space imposes limits on stepping up the level of response in an emergency – especially in a large-scale, county-wide emergency. This is why the county is planning to build a new Emergency Communications and Operations Center.

Transportation Safety Improvement Updates

The safety of our transportation infrastructure is a priority for myself, the County Council, and County Government as a whole. I am happy to share great news and updates about two important transportation projects in my district - safety improvements to U.S. 61 and Route P/Peine Road and progress on the Deer Creek Extension.
