From big events to everyday traffic management, Gateway Green Light, or GGL, is working behind the scenes in St. Charles County to keep you moving.
This exciting program is a cooperative effort between the County, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), and area municipalities to improve the coordination of traffic signals. GGL , which became operational in 2015, helps synchronize traffic signals on streets throughout the county – especially those that cross city limits – to improve traffic flow and cut emissions that contribute to ozone pollution. As St. Charles County has grown to become the third largest in the state and one of the fastest growing, this program is not just a luxury – it’s a necessity. While backups and congestion can still occur, GGL improves the flow and efficiency of the traffic. It has been an asset in keeping vehicles moving on roads and highways during Family Arena events, Riverfest in St. Charles, the St. Patrick’s Day Run for the Helmet and Parade in Cottleville, and more.
Amanda Brauer, Manager of Roads and Traffic for St. Charles County, oversees GGL. Amanda wrote an article for Roads & Bridges magazine that explains how the program came to fruition and how the technology works. The article will be in the February issue of the publication, but you can get a sneak preview of it here. I wanted to share the article with you because it explains this program clearly and succinctly – and it is exciting to see this innovative program showcased in a national publication. Additionally, I would like to give a special thank you to Amanda for managing the program and John Greifzu, Assistant Director of Administration, for his work in making this program a reality.
Your support of St. Charles County’s transportation infrastructure makes GGL possible. The Transportation Sales Tax that helps fund this and other projects was approved by you, our voters, in 1985 and reauthorized three times. The tax provides $20 million annually to fund road improvement projects throughout our community.
For updates about the GGL program, visit sccmo.org/GatewayGreenLight. And, if you see traffic light issues in the county, please call one of the following GGL partners. Make sure to have the name of the street where the traffic light is located, along with cross streets or other identifiers nearby.
