THE IMPORTANCE OF IMMUNIZATIONS |
Immunizations play an important role in preventing disease outbreaks and maintaining health. While few of us look forward to injections, the benefits of diminishing vaccine-preventable diseases far outweigh the temporary discomfort of a shot.
How Do Vaccines Work?

Vaccines work within the body to develop immunity to many diseases and fight future infections, resulting in healthier lives. If enough members of the community develop this protection, there will be a decreased opportunity for disease to spread among the entire population and can even provide protection for those unable to get vaccinated because of certain conditions. And, if a healthier body isn’t enough of a reason to vaccinate, staying well saves time and money!
Make the Experience Easier
While vaccinations do keep people healthy, and have decreased many medical concerns, the immunization process can be stressful. Parents and caregivers can help make the visit more comfortable by preparing children for the experience. Bring a favorite book, toy or video to distract the child from the shot. Be certain to reassure and praise the child, rewarding him or her for their behavior. Once home, caregivers can apply a cool washcloth to the site to soothe the pain and administer pain relievers or fever reducers, as recommended by their medical provider. Parents should contact their medical provider in rare situations where the irritation lingers, or an adverse reaction occurs.
Immunization Clinic
St. Charles County’s Immunization Clinic has vaccinations readily available, including those required by the state for school children. The clinic provides free vaccinations to those participating in the Vaccines for Children program and near-cost vaccinations for those ineligible for that program. For those with private insurance, the Immunization Clinic can bill your provider, although we are considered an out-of-network provider.
The Immunization Clinic is open from 8:30 to 11 a.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday by appointment. On Tuesdays, a limited number of walk-in openings are available. To schedule an appointment or for information, please call 636-949-1857.
