St. Charles County, Missouri – Whether for business, service or vacation, more and more Americans are traveling to new and exotic international destinations. During these trips, travelers can become exposed to infections, diseases and other items that may threaten their well-being. This month, the St. Charles County Department of Public Health is expanding its Travel Services, which not only will help individuals apply for identification documents, but help them remain healthy before, during and after their journey as well.

“Travel should be memorable, but those memories shouldn’t be about getting sick at the destination or not having the right paperwork,” says Hope Woodson, Director for the Department of Public Health. “Beginning Oct. 18, our expanded services will make travel planning less of a hassle by offering a health consultation about the desired destination, recommended vaccinations and assistance in obtaining identification records through one convenient location.”

Travel Health Consultation and Services

The Travel Health Clinic is located at the Department of Public Health, 1650 Boone's Lick Road in St. Charles. There, nurses will consult with travelers about their medical history and planned itinerary to determine recommended precautions. In addition to vaccinations and other medications, staff will suggest ways to avoid illness during trips and recommend items to pack for particular destinations. Should the individual need a Missouri birth certificate and/or assistance with a U.S. passport, those applications also can be completed through the health department.

The Travel Health Clinic operates by appointment from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursdays. Individuals should bring proof of identity, a current vaccination record, a list of medications currently taken (both prescription and over-the-counter) and a detailed listing of travel plans to the appointment. To make an appointment, please call 636-949-1857.

Travel Health services are payable by cash, check and credit card (includes a service fee). Following is the cost for the travel-specific vaccinations and consultation:

Applying for Travel Identification Documents

A passport is required for all international travel and a certified copy of a birth certificate may be necessary to complete that application. Missouri residents can apply for both documents through the Department of Public Health.

To apply for a U.S. passport, individuals will need to present a completed application to staff at the department. This application can be completed while waiting or can be found at sccmo.org/Passport (please do not sign the document until meeting with staff). Along with the completed application, individuals must present a recent 2-inch by 2-inch color photograph. This photo can be taken at the Department of Public Health for a small fee.

Passport application fees and any delivery fees must be paid by personal check or money order payable to the U.S. Department of State. Any execution or photography service fees associated with the passport application must be paid separately by cash, credit card or check payable to St. Charles County Government. The birth certificate application fee may be paid by cash, check or credit card (includes a service fee).
