St. Charles County, Missouri – Celebrated worldwide, Earth Day offers a tremendous opportunity to reflect on activities that improve a community through the efficient use of natural resources. To encourage those projects in St. Charles County, the Division of Environmental Health and Protection will join the Parks Department to host a local Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 16, 2016.

Held from 9 a.m. to noon at St. Charles County’s Broemmelsiek Park, the Earth Day Celebration presents a number of free activities for participants of all ages. St. Charles County’s Recycle Works Central and Recycle Works West facilities will collect and recycle electronic items from residents, and Division of Environmental Health and Protection staff will help participants create crafts using recycled materials. Parks Department officials will guide wildflower hikes along the park’s trails and instruct participants on how to convert recycled material into potato planters, onion towers or other garden gadgets. Additionally, members of the Boone Country Garden Club of Defiance will offer a number of plants, seeds and sprouts in a special sale on an as-available basis. Lastly, the first 100 guests at the event will receive a free native Missouri tree to take home. For information on the day’s activities, please call the Parks Department at (636) 949-7535 or view the County Calendar at

For the free recycling collection, residents should meet at the Horse Trailer Parking Lot near Shelter 2. All types of electronic material will be accepted, but other types of recyclable material cannot be collected this day (these items are routinely accepted on site at the Recycle Works locations in St. Charles and Wentzville). Participants should place the electronics securely in the trunk or rear of their vehicle, and staff will remove it during the collection. If you have questions regarding this special recycling collection, please call (636) 949-1800.

Located at 1795 Highway DD approximately four miles southwest of the Highway 40/61 and Winghaven Boulevard exit, Broemmelsiek Park presents 494 acres of natural recreation. Earth Day activities will be centered around shelters 2 and 3 near the park’s Schwede Road entrance. In addition to picnic shelters and several miles of multi-use trails, the park features several fishing lakes, an off-leash dog area, a public astronomy viewing site, an agriculture education center and much more.
