St. Charles County, Missouri – Learn how to cook the old-fashioned way with talented interpreters at The Historic Daniel Boone Home in Defiance! Join Terry and Nancy Sorchy with The Ox Bow Tavern Living History Group from 10 a.m.–4 p.m., Saturday, April 7, at our Hands-On Heritage: Hearth Cooking program. You’ll blend fresh ingredients with traditional hearth cooking techniques to prepare your own 19th century-inspired meal.

Hearth cooking style of food preparation is different than modern open fire cooking, and is performed by using 1800s cooking utensils and equipment such as a tin kitchen and baking kettle. Each participant enrolled in the program will get a unique, hands-on cooking experience using the hearths in our historic Engeldew House on site. After the food is prepped and your meal has finished cooking in the hearth, you’ll sit down to savor the historic dish you prepared.

The Sorchy’s have been volunteering at The Historic Daniel Boone Home for the past 12 years, serving as hearth cooking interpreters and reenactors with The Ox Bow Tavern Living History Group. These demonstrators are so passionate about hearth cooking practices of the 1800s that it has changed the way they cook today.

This cooking program is intended for ages 10 and up and is $20 per person. Limited spots are available! To make a reservation for Hands-On Heritage: Hearth Cooking, call the St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department at 636-949-7535.
