County Opens Nation's Largest Asphalt Pump Track

Largest Asphalt Pump Track in the Country Opens at the YAP

St. Charles County Parks opened the largest asphalt pump track in the nation at the Youth Activity Park in Dardenne Prairie on June 24. Nearly 600 guests of all ages attended to "test drive" the amazing 30,000-square-foot track that features beginner, intermediate and advance sections. This "all wheels" course is open year-round to BMX, mountain and  strider bikes; scooters; skateboards and inline skates.

Not a biker or skater? Spectators are welcome to come out and watch from the sidelines!

The track is expected to captivate riders from across the globe, including Tommy Zula, professional BMX rider and 2019 Redbull UCI Pump Track World Champion, who says he is excited to visit. Designed by Velosolutions, the world's premier pump track designer, this looping track consists of a circuit of paved rollers, including an impressive jump line, banked turns and features designed to be ridden by riders "pumping" instead of pedaling or pushing.

The pump track is open daily until sunset. Lighting will be installed by this fall, which will allow guests to ride the track until the park closes at night. Youth Activity Park hours are from 12 – 9 p.m., Sunday – Thursday; 12 – 10 p.m., Friday; and 10 a.m. – 10 p.m., Saturday. Guests 12 years and under must be accompanied by an adult. Helmets and a participation waiver are required.

To keep guests safe while visiting, the following health and safety measures have been implemented at the park:

  • Temperature screenings are mandatory for all.
  • Social distancing is required.
  • Those who are ill should not enter the park.
  • Wearing a face covering is encouraged.
  • Washing hands or using hand sanitizer before, during and after leaving is encouraged.
  • Sharing of equipment is not allowed.
  • Personal water bottles are encouraged; water fountains are temporarily turned off.

In addition to the new pump track, the Youth Activity Park is undergoing a redesign and redevelopment which will consist of a series of upgrades over the next several months. Improvements may include a water playground and water play area, picnic shelters, playground, bike playground and skills course, and a ninja warrior inspired gym suitable for children ages 4 –12.

For more information about these new amenities and upcoming programs at the Youth Activity Park, visit our website, or follow us on Facebook, or call the park at 636-561-4964. During inclement weather, visit the Rainout Line.

Splish, Splash! Summer Water Fun Awaits

Enjoy water summer fun in St. Charles County Parks.
Make a splash this summer in St. Charles County Parks! Whether you're taking the boat out on the river for an afternoon family cruise or learning how to paddleboard with your friends on one of our lakes, there are so many ways to beat the heat with water activities in our parks.

At Veterans Tribute Park, the kids will stay cool while soaking up the sun at the interactive Water Play Area. Hit a button and a large overhead waterspout dumps water from above or get showered from the ground sprayer fountains that shoot the water up! Multiple water falls gently cascade down the walls and slightly pool throughout the area. A large water table and a creek-like waterway top out this popular water feature in the park.

The Eco-Playground at Indian Camp Creek Park is another popular spot for children to gather and play during the hot summer months. Situated near the Lakeside Pavilion, this water playground celebrates the natural environment of the region. Similar to water flowing through a creek bed, young explorers will delight in digging in the sand and just may uncover several surprise finds. The rocky, natural landscape features stone frogs and a turtle that were created by renowned St. Louis artist Robert Cassilly.

Want to enjoy the water, but don't want to get wet? Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) lessons are available in July and August at The Park at New Melle Lakes. During each 90-minute class, a skilled instructor from our Park Ranger team will teach the basics of the sport before you head out to explore the lake. Participants must know how to swim and those 12 years of age and under must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. The cost of each program is $10 per person; pre-registration is required. To register, visit us online or call the Parks Department at 636-949-7535.

If you have your own SUP, kayak or canoe, bring it to the park! These non-motorized boats, are welcome on the lakes at Broemmelsiek Park, Klondike Park and The Park at New Melle Lakes. And If you don't have a watercraft, we've got you covered! Now you can reserve kayaks and paddleboards at these same parks through our new Paddle Share Rental stations. These self-serve features are open through October. Guests can reserve a watercraft online at the top of each hour from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The cost is $10 per hour for a kayak or paddleboard, and $15 per hour for a tandem kayak. Each rental comes with paddles and life jackets. For a step-by-step tutorial on how to make a reservation, watch this short video. For more information, call us at 636-949-7535.

Lather up the sunscreen; it's time to go boating! Accessing the nearby rivers couldn't be easier. Recreational boaters with speedboats, motorboats and sailboats can 'put in' using our free boat ramps. The ramps at  Riverside Landing in St. Charles and Hideaway Harbor Park in Portage des Sioux have access to the Mississippi River, and the Klondike Park Boat Ramp in Augusta is on the Missouri River.

For more information about water activities in the parks, visit us online or call the office at 636-949-7535.

Cast a Line in our Parks

Harvestable and catch-and-release fishing is available in St. Charles County Parks.
If fishing is your favorite pastime, be sure to cast a line in our multiple lakes, ponds, streams and rivers in St. Charles County Parks. Harvestable and catch-and-release fishing are available year-round and park lakes are stocked with bluegill, bass and catfish.

To ensure a healthy population in our waterways, it is necessary to remove several mature fish per acre each year. Bass and bluegill are self-sustaining populations and catfish can be re-stocked based on population studies conducted by our Natural Resource team. Without harvest, fish can become stunted and never reach full maturity. Anglers may possess no more than the daily limit of any given species while fishing in St. Charles County Parks ponds and lakes. These regulations are posted at each waterway.

There is no charge to fish in our parks, but visitors must comply with the rules and regulations of the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). Fishing within and along park waterways is governed by the regulations of the State of Missouri. Permits are required for all guests ages 16 – 64 who fish in St. Charles County Parks. More information about fishing rules and regulations can be obtained from MDC's website.

In addition to all these fishing opportunities throughout our regional parks system, we offer several Youth Fishing Camps to children during the summer months and participate in MDC's Free Fishing Days during the Saturday and Sunday following the first Monday in June. Call us at 636-949-7535 or visit us online to learn more.

Another Storybook Walk Coming Soon!

A new Storybook Walk is being installed at The Park at New Melle Lakes.

Thanks to donations provided by the St. Charles City-County Library Foundation, including a $2,600 grant from Cardinals Care, children of all ages and their families can enjoy the outdoors, get active and read while visiting Storybook Walks in St. Charles County Parks. In addition to the walks that already have been installed near the lake at Quail Ridge Park and the lakes at Veterans Tribute Park, a third Storybook Walk will be opening this year at The Park at New Melle Lakes.

The new 3/4-mile walk will loop halfway around the paved Green Trail and halfway around the paved Orange Trail in the park and will feature 18 aluminum informational signs that showcase the picture book pages of acclaimed children’s books. Each Storybook Walk is self-guided, allowing guests to enjoy at their leisure. Participants will delight in reading these entertaining stories while reconnecting to nature and getting outside for some fresh air. Open to the public throughout the year, St. Charles County Parks Storybook Walks feature a new story every three months.

To find out when the new Storybook Walk opens or learn what children's books are being featured throughout the year, follow us on Facebook or visit our Activity Registration on our website.
