Parks: Best Places to View Fall Colors

Experience spectacular fall colors in St. Charles County Parks.
Autumn is one of the most beautiful times of the year, and St. Charles County Parks top the list of scenic places to view spectacular displays of colorful fall foliage. Picturesque backdrops await those seeking vibrant displays of rich ambers, burnt oranges, plums and golds this season.

While it's difficult to predict exactly when the leaves will turn, typically in eastern Missouri colors start changing in late September, peak in mid-October, and finish by mid-November. Weather plays a major role in this transformation. Different species of trees, including maple, sumac, dogwood, ash, oak, hickory, sassafras, and more, turn at different times, offering eye-catching vistas for up to six weeks in the parks.

For a more personal experience in discovering the beauty of fall, guests are invited to walk through some of the most remote areas of St. Charles County Parks at our Ranger-Guided Fall Hike from 9 - 11:30 a.m., Sunday, Nov. 1, at Matson Hill Park in Defiance. Park Ranger Abigail Chambers will lead guests on a 3-mile hike through the 475-acre, rugged, heavily forested park. The walk is free, but pre-registration is required. To make a reservation, visit stccparks.org and click "Activity Registration" or call 636-949-7535.

Fun Fall Festivities for the Entire Family

The annual Fall Harvest Festival is from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 10 at Broemmelsiek Park.
The annual Fall Harvest Festival at Broemmelsiek Park is just around the corner. Bring the family out to the Educational Agriculture Area for a day of old-time music, crafts and fun fall activities from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 10; admission is free and registration is not required.

Festival-goers will experience historic demonstrations, such as apple butter making, learn how to press sorghum for molasses, and purchase pumpkins and a variety of farm fresh produce from local exhibitors.

For the craftier individuals, wreath making will be available while supplies last. For a nominal fee, guests of all ages can enjoy creating their very own fall decoration made of natural materials gathered from our parks.

The IL-MO Tractor and Engine Club will be on-site displaying vintage antique equipment. Club members will be demonstrating different farming tasks using these 20th century engines and tractors.

The 3-acre corn maze is ready for visitors! Be sure to stop by this free attraction while at the site. This year's maze is more challenging than ever with more twists, turns and dead ends than before. You'll get lost while trying to find your way out!

For the public's safety, these festive demonstrations and activities will be spread out throughout the park's 3-acre site.
